He disagrees with him over free trade for corn but does not insist that he is right. He argues, however, that free admission of Brazilian and Cuban sugar would increase the number of enslaved people employed in its production and stimulate the slave trade and that it was useless to rely on the consciences and honour of men to prevent this happening.
