He mentions that he had heard of the departure from the West Indies of the first contingent of Black missionaries for Africa, sent by the Moravians. Trew had made an appeal to the Bishop of London as they thought the Church of England should lead the way, but the Church Missionary Society was very low in funds. The Bishop had licensed Hanson as chaplain to the Gold Coast (Ghana); he had been ordained some weeks before by the Archbishop of Canterbury. He apologises for being wrapped up in Africa but claims that he did not forget Wilson's work in India and East Indian slavery, and that he was thankful for Lord Ellenborough's proclamation, and anxious to hear how it worked, fearing that custom and ignorance would prolong slavery even though it was illegal. He reports on the well-being and activities of the several members of his family. He declares that if he could see the dawn of African deliverance that and West Indian emancipation would satisfy him. He writes that though Joseph John Gurney was not well, he was going on a mission to France, his daughter Anna was about to be married, and he had an excellent wife.
