He claims that this news had made him almost mad with joy, but the newspapers, Trew, their committee in London, and all their friends seem to have ignored it. Hoping this would not prove to be a hoax, he declares that he believed in it utterly and that this was how Providence worked. Trew had informed him that Stokes could not collect subscriptions because he had not been legally inducted into his office; he asks Lushington to sort this matter out with the committee.
