He records that, as a clergyman in Jamaica before Emancipation, he had befriended Black people, at a time when it was dangerous to instruct them, and that on his return to England he had renounced a fine living in Ireland in order to devote himself to the education of Black people as Secretary to the Mico Charity. He refers to his work for the African Civilization Society and their wish to restore him to the state that he had resigned for the benefit of Africa. (Copy.)
