They were accompanied by Edward, Nixon, and Tommy, and travelled to Slough by train, where they had a poor dinner in a grand hotel, and then drove through Windsor Great Park in a fly until it was time for the audience, at which Buxton was accompanied by Nixon as his valet. She had walked about the castle exterior during their absence. Trew arrived just after Buxton had gone in, but though the latter knew he was there, he did not send for him. The Prince had listened to Buxton's sad story, expressed sympathy and disappointment at the suspension of the Society, and, implying that the Queen and he both read the Friend of Africa, had said that it should continue to be published whenever there was anything of note to report. The interview had ended with a discussion of shooting and the capercailzies imported by Buxton.
