Bannister had informed him of a proposal that a mixed settlement of Black and white people should be started with a model farm at Port Natal (Durban), but he himself did not have the strength to do anything about it nor to start an inquiry, though he believed the condition of the indigenous peoples there to be very poor, and he hoped the Society would discover the best means of alleviating this hardship. He agrees that it would be a good idea to collect all the information Moffat and Dr A. Smith could provide while they were in England and to base a memorial on it to present to Lord Stanley. He assumes that Smith was referring to some papers containing a statement by Dr Philip which, he had been informed in a letter of 29 Aug to one of his family members, was to be sent but which had not yet reached him. He promises to transmit its contents to Wilkin and the Society as soon as he can and sends a subscription with this letter. (Copy.)
