He asks whether it was imperative that it be abandoned and insists that it was not inevitable for it to be in a ruinous state. Trotter thought the government might buy the 'Ethiope' from Jamieson and employ Becroft to ply up and down the Niger. Referring to a letter he was enclosing, he claims that Anna Gurney agreed with him on this point. He thinks they should appeal for money at the annual general meeting; the amount did not need to be very great. He quotes the opinion of Schön, who had been staying with him, on the importance of the farm as a point of communication with the interior of Africa. If the committee could not agree with him over this, he asks that they should summon a meeting of all the subscribers so that he might address them in the hope of obtaining support for continuing a little longer.
