He asks him to break the news to Bird's brother John and to let him see a letter from a Mr Prince, a friend of Bird's, addressed to his elder brother. He mentions that Stenhouse was dying, that Strange was one of the three officers who had not had the fever, and that Smart's friend Willie had died and was buried next to Bird. He asks him to tell Sir Edward Perry and Captain Beaufort that he was unable to write to them and to ask them to let him see his letter to the Admiralty. He announces that he would follow the 'Wilberforce' as soon as his sick men were recovered, and that they had got through a great deal of the work before reaching Egga and had obtained much useful information. Finally, he records that Bird Allen had been in favour of the 'Albert' pressing on up the river.
