Catherine Buxton to Richenda Buxton, reporting on the condition of her parents-in-law, 26 Jan 1842
She mentions the task ahead of Buxton in the committees that day. Trew had insisted that he should go out to the West Indies for the good of his family even if he had to finance the journey entirely himself and that if he went, he would certainly work for the cause there. She was feeling much better about the news since they had spent the previous evening considering it and concluding that the loss of forty-two out of more than 300 men was not as severe as that incurred by other enterprises and that more substantial work had been done than she had first realised. She refers to an excellent letter from Carr about the success of the model farm. She suggests that since the picture was now altered, Trew's journey to the West Indies made more sense, even if it only resulted in one missionary being sent out, though she wished he would delay his journey until after Trotter had returned; this he refused to do. She relates the information Trew had imparted to them about members of the expedition, including the surgeon Marshall, who had been quite prepared to give his life for Africa, and of the offers they had already received from those willing to return to Africa should the expedition be renewed.
