He was confident that the expedition would succeed in its intent but anxious to receive more letters and to hear that Fishbourne was no longer detained by lack of men. He observes that the expedition seemed to have been just as successful as they had hoped in view of the treaties made, the demand for missionaries, the acceptance of a catechist, and the purchase of land in what seemed to be, for Africa, a healthy situation. Despite the regrettable loss of life, and in view of the noble purpose of the expedition, he could not regret sending it out and nothing had occurred to induce him to abandon it, for if they were at war with France, anyone who advocated breaking off hostilities because of the loss of 27 men would be considered mad. He quotes the letter from Sir Robert Inglis (pp. 357e-h). He informs him that the five great European powers had signed a treaty declaring the slave trade piracy. He asks to be remembered to all the officers whom he had met and reports that Mrs Trotter had endured his absence well. (Copy.)
