Trotter had refuted a charge by Lieutenant Littlehale that he had unduly exposed the white men on the expedition to risks; Trotter claimed to have forbidden them to go on shore and had even sailed on a Sunday in order to remove them from an unhealthy part of the river. Lieutenant Fishbourne was heartbroken at not being able to return with the 'Soudan' for lack of men. Sir Edward Parry had obtained leave from the Admiralty to publish some of the despatches. She longs for a strong statement to counter the attacks of The Times, one printed on a half sheet of paper so that it might easily be distributed. Finally, she mentions that they were attending a prayer meeting for the expedition at the house of a cousin of Captain Trotter and that Captain Henry Hope had visited them the previous evening.
