Buxton to Edward Buxton, advising him to read over the letters from the Niger to his family as he had done, 6 Dec 1841
He explains that even now he did not regret the expedition, despite the loss of nine men, arguing that wars would not be abandoned for so small a loss and great national interests were equally in question her; the overthrow of the slave trade, the spread of the gospel, and an increase by a quarter to world production. He considered the disaster a test of their resolution and faith in God. (Memoir, p. 542.) (Copy.)
