He reports on the Christian spirit in which Mrs Trotter was bearing her husband's absence and conveying the news she received of the expedition to him. He comments on Captain Tucker's willingness to render them assistance and the results he expected from the blockade of the river, his hopes for the model farm, and the rumours he has heard that the agricultural agent, Carr, was not as well qualified for his task as he had been led to believe. He gives him permission to dismiss Carr if he thinks it wise, though he was sure the model farm should not be abandoned.
