He describes all the signs that pointed to their visit drawing to its close, reaching the end of their novel, running out of game to shoot and marmalade and currant jelly. He also describes their bag of game birds, their adventures when deer hunting, and the shooting of a deer by Edmund, another by himself and Edward, and two more by Edward alone. His health had improved tremendously since the beginning of his holiday, and he would have been delighted if they too had been of the party and each had slain his buck. Larry had insisted they carry the deer back home whole on the top of the carriage and that one should go to Mrs Upcher, Edmund's mother-in-law, and one to Mrs Gurney, Edward's mother-in-law.
