He apologises for taking so long to answer their questions and for being able to provide so little information on the Mendi due to Henry Macaulay, for many years a commissioner in Sierra Leone, being absent in Germany for his health's sake. He was enclosing letters from Washington and Trew and his own advice was that they could do nothing better for the formerly enslaved Black people than to provide them with a good education. This could be done in Antigua and so he was getting in touch with the Trustees of the Mico Charity to ask that they might be admitted to their schools there. He expected that by the time they were trained, the expedition would have returned from the Niger and, in the light of the information thus gained, they would be able to plan their future on returning to their own country. He asks to be kept informed of their disposal, characters, and aptitude and promises to do whatever he can for their benefit. (Copy.)
