Buxton to Lushington, about the suggestion by Sturz, who claimed to have great influence in Brazil, for changing the climate of opinion there about slavery through his control over the press provided Britain would consent to reduce the duty on sugar; Gore Ousley had a high estimation of Sturz, who desired to get Palmerston to employ him in engendering a favourable frame of mind in Brazil for the completion of a suitable treaty, 14 Apr 1841
He sends Lushington the relevant papers, suggests that he might like to see Sturz himself, and adds that he was writing to Porter, who would arrange it. He writes that he was leaving it to Lushington's ingenuity to work out how all this should be contrived so as to obtain the extinction of slavery in Brazil. Finally, he thanks him for an opinion that coincided with his own views and complains that his doctor would neither permit him to go to London nor even say when he might. (Copy.)
