He sends information on the slave trade, stipulating that his name should not be connected with it. He describes how the American consul in Tripoli had written to Sir Edmund Lyons, for lack of an American Minister in Athens, and that the slave trade was being carried on under the Greek flag. Lyons had informed the Greek Government and the King but for some months was derided for his pains, though they knew what was happening. The British authorities seized a Greek ship stranded at Cephalonia and liberated the enslaved people. When Lord Powerscourt's yacht moored next to a slave ship at Sym (Symi) and he saw the chained enslaved people brought on deck, the Greek Government was compelled to take notice. The King sent a project de loi to the Council of State by which the Greek law condemning the slave trade was publicised; it stated that non-observance of this law was not the fault of the Greek people. The King had been deeply embarrassed by the affair. Church records having caused one man to be brought before the criminal tribunal for torture and the government's tacit consent to allow Governors in certain regions to use poison 'against individuals supposed to belong to robbers'. He describes the Greek administration as tyrannous, worse than in Capodistria's time, and believes that it would be necessary for the people to contest the constitution by force of arms. In his opinion, Whigs and Tories who had seen something of the situation all agreed that the Greeks were to blame for having so long suffered such oppression, naming as examples Lord Londonderry and Sir Robert Inglis. He hopes Buxton will champion this cause in the House of Commons. (Copy.)
