The Duchess of Sutherland to Buxton, expressing doubts as to the propriety of agents other than the accredited ones of the Anti-Slavery Society being permitted to ask for subscriptions for it, regretting that a rival society had been founded in New York, that there were differences between friends of the anti-slavery cause, and that women should feel called to speak upon public platforms, though she sympathises with their enthusiasm, 21 Dec 1840
She points out that females cannot be expected to make large donations to the cause because they had many claims upon their slender purses. She inquires whether he had recently heard from Garrison.
