He mentions that Sir George Stephen was likely to challenge him to a duel a second time for not finding £500 to publish papers abusing The Times. A postscript reports that R.R. Gurley [of the American Colonization Society] had addressed their committee meeting and that Madden had been introduced to it. Gurley had wanted the Society to restrict their interests to within certain limits in Africa; the Society had objected to this. (Copy.)
