Buxton to Lord John Russell, about the imminent return of the Ashanti princes to Africa, the favourable report given of them by Pyne, and his own fear that when they returned home they would be so dependent upon the king of Ashanti (Ghana) that they would revert to the practices of the society, 31 Oct 1840
He suggests that they might be made salaried British consuls responsible for reporting on Ashanti matters and visiting the Governor at the coast at regular periods, a suggestion originally made by Hutton, the merchant to whose care the princes were originally entrusted. He also asks that Pyne should be reimbursed for the sum of £107.7.8d that he had spent in addition to the money allowed him for the princes' tour of England. He finally begs that they might have an audience with the Queen to give them prestige in their own country. (Copy.)
