He explains that he had no objections to raise against the society that Conder had joined but he refused to become a director or trustee since he was trying to strip himself of some of those honours and duties. He thought, too, that any connection with the encouragement of growth of sugar in the east would appear to act against his well-established interest in the West Indian Black community. In any case, Africa demanded all his attention at that time. He adds that he hoped they would still be able to make use of Conder's stores of information on Africa on their committees. (Copy.)
