He mentions that he was sending Jamieson's letters to assist him but warns that they must not make unfair use of them since they were letters written to an individual and that he should not employ his normal method of attack since Jamieson was an honest man who intended to be a friend of Africa. He advises him to consult Samuel Gurney before attacking the pamphlet because he thought what was said in it could be turned to their advantage. He tells him that he had seen a letter from Jamieson enclosing one from Becroft, the captain of the steamer that was just starting up the Niger, in contradiction to Jamieson's statement that he was withdrawing it, and promises to send the letter to him. He warns him not to make the pamphlet appear to come from him because he had a habit of saying things that it would be inexpedient for Buxton himself to utter, and not to make a bitter attack on Sturge and his followers. He adds that Stephen's pamphlet had just that moment arrived; nevertheless, he was going to lend him the letters.
