He now writes of his conviction that they should let the storm blow over, being thankful that nothing worse had happened since they had taken the risk of combining a number of conflicting elements. He admits he regrets some actions. He insists that nothing either of them or the Committee could do would satisfy all parties, and that explanations would only exacerbate the situation and give rise to questions that could be answered only by divulging information they were not at liberty to reveal. Nugent had told him that he expected O'Connell to attack them at the meeting of the Anti-Slavery Society on Friday and he intended to defend them because he believed O'Connell was wrong; he had urged him to be silent unless it were impossible. He shared Buxton's annoyance over what had passed and his strong feelings over the charge of having abandoned O'Connell unjustly in favour of the Tories and Churchmen. He is most anxious for union [unity] in their Society and is afraid of increasing the irritation of O'Connell and others but fears that no one could instantly placate them. He urges that further means be taken to conciliate the Dissenters because their old parliamentary friends were displeased. Finally, he says that some notice should be taken of B. Smith, who had donated £50, and that they might consider what more could be done.
