He describes rising to see the sunrise over the sea and his unexpected shower bath when, he having left his cabin door open, a sailor swabbing the deck inadvertently threw a bucket of water over him. He mentions having been unexpectedly impressed by Byron the previous evening but concludes that David was the better poet, adding that Byron could never have sailed on as calm a sea as he had been doing for he could not otherwise have failed to describe the velvety waves sliding past without breaking. He mentions that he was going to deliver Anna's letter to Mrs Folcher in Marseilles, that Gurney Barclay was a very pleasant travelling companion, and that they would be leaving in a hired coach the following day.
