She reports that Buxton had been less languid for the last few days and looked much better, that they would probably part in Genoa, if not in Lyons, and that she had decided to stay in Europe until the second week in Jun, possibly going from Lyons to Geneva. She mentions the letters she had received from England that day, one containing news of the death of the Carrs' little boy. The young people had gone on an expedition to Paestum with Hanbury that day and were to return on Wednesday morning before they set sail. She had seen the packet in which they were to travel and was fearful of the effect of the journey on herself. She had been ill with a headache over the weekend but records the visit of Lady H, her husband and two girls to drink tea with them. She describes Lady H as odd and pities her two nice girls. She also describes the visit to them of Madame de Stael, the way in which they had spent their Sunday, and the extent to which they were missing her. She also reports that peace had been declared, which was a comfort to her. Buxton adds a letter to Anna and Charles saying how much they were missed, repeating that the girls and Powell had gone to Paestum with Charles Hanbury. He describes rising at dawn to see the sunrise over Vesuvius but only seeing the view of the bay from his windows, and how he and Hannah had spent the evening on their own. He anticipates the arrival of a letter from Richards the following morning and remarks on how privileged he and Charles were to be seeing Athens in her company, describing her as the best of all travelling companions. He comments on the hubbub in the town when a bombardment was expected and the peace that had been settled. Finally, he reports that they were all in good heart for the voyage.
