He describes the walk along the edge of Lake Avernus with Anna in her chair and their exploration of the cave, though Anna had to remain at the entrance, and their sight of the Sibyl's drawing room. During this excursion, their torch went out, though they were in no danger and were able to retrace their route once it had been lit again. The following day, he wrote about their excursion to Pompeii, describing what they saw in each house, the forum and the temples, the view of the mountains and bay from the site, their picnic in a barn-like room, where they were entertained by a musician and two men and a boy who danced, the place where the oracle was said to deliver messages, and the theatre and amphitheatre. He also describes the blockading of Naples Harbour by a British man-of-war, which they saw on their way back to their lodgings, and the excitement of the people. He assures his son that he thought the whole thing would come to nothing although he had ordered their passports to be prepared so that they might be ready to leave in a hurry.
