The following day, he reports an improvement in his condition though he still feels very weak, describes the care Hannah took of him in illness and his enjoyment of it. He believes he had been given the best helpmate in the world, quotes Sir Walter Scott's encomium on woman, and praises the help of the children in dressing him, reading to him when he could not sleep and keeping him cheerful. He describes Anna Gurney as a glass of champagne who never failed to make him feel brighter. He asks Edward to let Lushington and Trew know of his illness, adding that it should make no more than a week's difference to his return to England, and to tell Trew that he hoped that an [African Civilization] Committee would be set up in every town of size in Europe following the translation of his book into several languages - he had already arranged for one in Rome. A comment by Hannah Buxton insists that Buxton's illness was further proof of his former activities having exhausted him and records her intention that he should not leave her after giving them all such a fright.
