After asking him to tell Lushington this, he complains that he had not heard from him recently and longed to do so. He commends Edward's action on starting a subscription list for a cotton farm in Sierra Leone and predicts that he would soon find such a response that he would not need to ask his father for as much as £300 towards the project. He describes his previous day's visit with Hannah and Richards to the Palatine Hill, recounting the excesses of Caligula on discovering himself to be a god. He also describes his audience that day with the Pope, in the company of Fowell, Charles, Richards, the Hanoverian Minister, a Danish count, and another Englishman. They had discussed the Roman prisons, his report on them that he gave to the Pope, the slave trade, and slavery, and Buxton had told the Pope of the satisfaction his recent action had given in Britain. He also records having presented a paper by Anna Gurney on cruelty toward animals in Italy and the Pope's promise to inquire into the matter. After this, he had had an interview with Cardinal Lambroschini, chief Secretary of State to the Vatican, in which the same ground was covered. The family intended to visit Tivoli the following day.
