He writes of his children's delight at the news of the present Edward was giving them, about which they would write themselves. He comments that she had been quite right to warn them of the danger of the marshes since two gentlemen, who had usurped the lodgings they had intended to take there, had both died, one of malaria and the other of marsh-fever. He describes Rome as being carnival-mad, but they had observed the local custom by laying in a store of 200 lbs of sugar plums with which to pelt the passers-by and Charles had masqueraded as an old Italian woman and invaded their carriage in the street; he had pelted an old clergyman Sir Thomas Cullum with sugar plums, who took it very well.
