He complains that his work on the report for the Pope was proceeding very slowly, and that he was waiting for a copy of Samuel Hoare's letter on prisons because he now felt very ignorant on the subject and dared not make a move until he had had his guidance, wryly remarking that he was considered an oracle on the subject in Rome. He mentions that he needed advice on two points, the treatment of prisoners before trial and the instruction they should receive after it, and asks him to consult Samuel Hoare and send his reply. He promises to send copies of his notes with a letter to Samuel Hoare. He notes that he might need to postpone finishing the report until he reached England, although he would like to do so before leaving Rome. He announces that they would be leaving for Naples in a fortnight and that he intended to return by sea via Marseilles, arriving in London around 20 Apr, and failing that, certainly before 1 May. He reports that he is sitting for a bust by the sculptor Wolf and that Rome was celebrating Carnival. Finally, he thanks Catherine for her entertaining account of the Queen's wedding, which had created great interest. (Copy.)
