He disagrees with Buxton's ecumenical approach to introducing Christianity to Africa, warning that it could disintegrate into one form of heresy or another, though he despairs of ever convincing Buxton of this since he was a statesman; he therefore agrees to differ with him on this point, despite agreeing with him on so much else. He writes that he would have liked to witness Buxton's audience with the Pope and that he appreciated his views on the Colosseum, and reminds him of the other memorable events in Christian history that took place in Rome. He expresses approval of Buxton's desire for an indigenous college and tells him that his own new cathedral was designed for missionary ministers in particular, observing that the local administration tended to move very slowly in matters of Christianity. Finally, he inquires about his old friend Sir Charles Metcalfe.
