He writes of his pleasure in the work by both him and Priscilla on the book, his wife's opposition to Stephen's request that Buxton should return to England immediately, the advice to the contrary that he had received from another correspondent, and his intention to return to England in Apr in plenty of time for the Society's general meeting in May. He praises Stephen for his restraint in not pressing his views on religious instruction at that time, adding that he too would have preferred a bolder course, but discretion was necessary to retain the support of the Tories and high churchmen, and insisting that they needed the backing of Inglis and his followers. To reinforce his view, he quotes the action of Wilberforce and Stephen's father at the establishment of the African Institution when they passed a resolution that it should take no part in missions and schools. He advises against a resolution of this kind, advocating merely silence on the subject. He encourages him over the prospect of raising funds for the expedition, writing that a number of people in Rome were willing to support it with subscriptions and that when they could produce some proof of their success, there would be plenty of money available for cultivation in Africa. He suggests the opening of several subscription accounts so that people wishing to support missionary activity in Africa by a particular sect might be sure that their money would be used to support its mission. Finally, he observes that this letter is a poor return for the copious epistles Stephen had sent him but that it would have to suffice if it were to be sent that day. (Copy.)
