He describes at length the journey to Albano with Cresswell of the whole of their party, except for Anna and Hannah. The younger members had walked on the mountains and the others had gone hunting but failed to shoot the three wild boars they disturbed. He had read St. Paul's account of his travels there while riding in the coach. He describes their night spent in the Duke of Braschi's palace, the noise of cats, rats, doves, and bullfrogs, and the attacks of the mosquitoes, which combined ill with the discomfort of beds not slept in for ten years. He compares their sufferings with those of Horace in the same place, described in his Fifth Satire, which he advises Edward to read. He writes of his two days' sport on the Duke's land, the difficulties of directing beaters when neither spoke the other's language, and their decision not to spend another night in the palace but to return to Cisterna. He observes that, thought he was said to have no appreciation of scenery, his greatest pleasure on those two days was in the mountains themselves, the views of white castellated towns, and the splendour of the woods. He mentions how pleased he was to find a number of letters awaiting him on his return to Rome and asks him to thank Lushington and Forster for theirs, complaining that he would have welcomed four times as much news from Edward himself as he wished to hear everything about everybody.
