Mrs C. Upcher to Anna Gurney, about Lord John Russell's announcement of government support for the policy advocated in The Remedy on the first day of the new parliamentary session, 18 Jan 1840
She had visited Trew's office, where nothing seemed to be happening and where they had heard nothing about Fernando Po (Bioko). She describes the Queen's opening of Parliament, the worn appearance of Lord Melbourne, and the way the Tories had been disconcerted by the government conceding the word 'Protestant'. She finally remarks on the report of the drinking of the health of [Edward's] infant son in Rome. (Copy.)
