Buxton to his uncle, Charles Buxton, wishing him a happy New Year and recounting the blessings they shared, 1 Jan 1840
He writes that he had decided it was time to devote more thought to spiritual matters. He reports on Hannah's improved health, the improvement that idleness and holidaying had wrought in him, and their sightseeing. He asks whether the Christmas turkey and sausages had arrived and given satisfaction. Finally, for his entertainment, he describes the how chariot races were held in Rome in ancient times and the field in which they were run.
