Anna Gurney, noting the coexistence of finery and dirt and the luxuriance of the villas, had declared Rome the nastiest and dirtiest place in the world. He asks him to deliver a letter from him to Bandinel. He writes of the depression caused by Lushington's letter, which had led him to believe that, in his absence, nothing was being done to publish the book, call meetings, or facilitate the establishment of cotton farms in Africa. All this had persuaded him that while the women and boys of his party travelled to Athens, he should return to England to apply a little of his own rashness and obstinacy to their cause. He adds that he would probably wait until he received replies from Edward and Lushington before finally making up his mind. He is grateful to Priscilla for her courage in altering the book without knowing what his opinion on it might be and to Edward for all the care and trouble he had undertaken on his behalf. He is also grateful to Sir George Stephen for correcting the proofs of his book, though irritated by his taking issue with the followers of Sturge. He sends thanks to William Forster for a letter and hopes that he will continue writing to him. Finally, he asks what Edward had done with Acland's box and whether O'Connell had answered his letter.
