Buxton to Jeremie, about his departure for Rome and the good reports of Hannah he was receiving, and the impossibility of extracting from the government a promise of making him Governor-General of Africa, warning him that any such promise might be of little value because they would probably not be in office when the time came, and advising him not to go to the expense of coming to England on that account, 17 Nov 1839
He tells him that the government had agreed to send out an expedition of three steamers, which would be ordered in a few days' time and would set sail at the end of Oct to sail up the Niger, make treaties with the chiefs and obtain land for the growing of cotton. He describes how hard he had been working at completing his book and promises to send him a copy when it was published. He says he would be mortified if Jeremie were in England while he was visiting the Pope but that Lushington and James Stephen had promised to act on his behalf in Jeremie's interest. He writes that he had not heard recently from Jeremie's daughter but that he had heard that the English climate suited her and inquires about the health of Jeremie and his wife. He sends a message to Miss Rice that, though his own son Fowell was not going to Cambridge for a year, he had asked Gurney to speak to all his friends about Mr Mackenzie. (Copy.)
