He urges him and Samuel Hoare not to hesitate to sign the guarantee because he considered himself to be as much bound by it as though it were an undertaking on his own account. The most important thing for him to do was to draw up a model treaty; Palmerston was willing to let him see the treaties in his office and would instruct Bandinel to show them to him. He urges him to see what could be done to make Jeremie Governor-General of Africa if he came to England that winter and to see what he could do about slavery in India because he believed it was undergoing a change for the worse. He says he is sending him a copy of the memorandum of what they had discussed the previous day, that he had enough material for his interview with Lord John Russell on the sovereignty question, and that if he wished to see any of his papers in his absence he should apply to Edward. He urges him to write to him and adds that he would go in good heart if he knew that he and Inglis, Trew, Samuel Gurney, and Edward were equally enthusiastic for the cause and would work at it.
