Palmerston to Buxton, apologising for not having answered his letters sooner, explaining that the negotiations for Fernando Po (Bioko) and Annabon (Annobón) were proceeding, and that he thought the government would be successful if they raised the offer to £60,000, 21 Oct 1839
He promises to let him know as soon as there were any developments. He writes that he had applied to the Pope some months ago and hoped Buxton would use his personal influence when in Rome to obtain a Bull from him, offering him a letter of introduction to Aubyn, the unaccredited agent there, who would introduce him to those most likely to be of use to him.
