- Buxton to Sir Edward Parry, asking him about Captain Bird Allen and Ellis as possible candidates for consideration for the post of naval leader of the expedition to Africa (copy), 6 Jul 1839
- Buxton to Andrew Johnston, about the meeting on the following Monday of some anti-slave trade activists, for which he was preparing, his fear of calling a large meeting until he had heard about Fernando Po (Bioko), and his letter [to Grant], having missed the boat to Sierra Leone. He tells him of the appeal from the High Church men to him to present their petition for more churches to the Common Council. He mentions Sarah's health, Anna's enthusiasm, his pleasure that Andrew had liked his book, and his belief that he had heard of a pious naval officer suited to head his expedition (copy), 6 Jul 1839.
