He writes of receiving Trew's circular on the very day a meeting was held in his chapel in Kingston on the same subject, the difficulty of finding men suited to go out as teachers from Jamaica, although there might be some qualified in other directions, and his doubts about their ability to function on an unsupervised basis in Africa. He describes a member of his congregation, who remembered his original language and might go. He warns Trew that the inhabitants of Jamaica were not perfect, that there was still antagonism between plantation owners and labourers, but that 70% of the stories heard in England could be discounted and that in nearly all cases there had been mismanagement by those in authority. Since everyone dealing with the enslaved people had been self-seeking, he writes that it was not surprising that they were seemingly adopting a similar attitude. He also describes Black people's confusion at the fact that their labour was valued by the plantation owner, for the British Government's records, at 2/6d a day, while his own payment was between 7 1/2d and 1/ 01/2d a day. When 1/8d was paid by certain employers, Black people were charged between 6/8d and 13/4d a week for their hut and ground.
