Lushington to Buxton, about the resignation of the government the previous day and Lord Melbourne's declaration that he was resigning office because he was not allowed to fully implement the Emancipation Act, protect Black people, and keep faith with Parliament, 8 May 1839
He remarks on the strangeness of a Whig Government being defeated by the consequences of the Abolition Act, which it had itself carried, and asks whether the Anti-Slavery Party ought to express its regret that the resignation had taken place on those grounds even though he himself could take no part in such demonstration because he was politically so closely allied to Melbourne and Lord John Russell. He adds that he did not wish the Anti-Slavery Party to be involved in any political manner, but he thought the matter worth consideration because the Society had previously pressed the government to secure urgent laws in Jamaica and they should make it clear that they refused to be tricked into accepting less than full justice for Black people. He foretells that Sir Lionel Smith would be replaced by a Tory and the special constables by barristers going on circuit and that though Black people would probably do well and be happy, the island itself would not prosper. He also reports again the purchase of land by Black people for division into allotments and requests that Buxton reflect on all these matters since it had been his own committee in 1836 that had prevented the Jamaican laws being passed and had brought about the need for legislation in Britain. Finally, he records that the Queen was much distressed by the event and that though he did not yet know whether anyone else had been sent for to form a government, he would let Buxton know when he did.
