He writes of the two meetings held on this subject, the interest of the Baptist and Wesleyan missionaries, the society formed to promote their aims, the interest evinced by the Black population, and his own confidence that Black agents could be found in the West Indies for civil and commercial establishments, since a good basic education was now available to all, with higher education not being necessary for this purpose, for the time being. He comments on the susceptibility of Black people, the suitability of Fernando Po (Bioko) as a base for their proposed operations, and the ability and character of the five clerks of mixed heritage in his office. He also mentions his anxiety to hear of the fate of John Keats, an African who had left Jamaica some months before on 'H.M.S. Rattle Snake' to return to Sierra Leone and carry the gospel into the Congo Basin. (Copy.)
