This was followed by an hour-long talk with James Stephen, when he advised him to stick to his position in the Colonial Office until he was turned out of it; on being told of the £3,000 pension proposed by Glenelg, he advised him to take it with an easy conscience. This was followed by interviews with Spring Rice about Mayon and Lord Duncannon about Edmund, dinner with Lushington and their conversation, the arrival of Joseph Sturge and their agreement to differ, Sturge's wild scheme to exert moral and religious influence, and unspecified other influence without contact with the slave owners to obtain suppression of the slave trade. Once more, he records that he was too tired to sleep but that he was spending that day quietly at the Brewery. He reports a favourable letter from Gladstone about his book. (Copy.)
