He mentions a public meeting he had attended in Calcutta (Kolkata) on the Indian indentured labourer trade to Mauritius, which threatened to continue the slave trade, the opposition of Lord Auckland and the rest of the government to the slave trade, his confidence that they would suppress it, and his wish that they felt as strongly about the importance of abolishing the idolatries of Hinduism. He also mentions the increase in the number of chaplains and the filling up of the Sees of Bombay and Madras and expresses his disappointment at the course Buxton had taken in the House of Commons over the Irish education question. It seemed clear to him that O'Connell planned to stamp Protestantism out in Ireland and that whatever Buxton had done was an instalment in his overthrow of the Church in Ireland. He adds that nine years ago, he concurred in the Emancipation of the Catholics, which he now thought to have been wrong; then, he had not believed that they would take the lead against the Church. He admits that there were other views on this and he believed Buxton held them honestly and conscientiously, but he hopes that upon Buxton's return to Parliament, he would break with the O'Connell faction and rejoin the Wilberforce, Thornton, and Plumtree group. Finally, he describes his activities on his visitation and send his affectionate regards to Buxton and the family and the Friends.
