He mentions the publication of his book, much altered so as not to alarm Spain over Fernando Po (Bioko), Russia over hemp, France over gum, or America over cotton, in spite of which it was larger than the original. He promises to send him copies and asks him to present one to the President. He writes of the heavy blow of Glenelg's retirement and his determination not to worry because the slave trade was in the hands of Providence. He wishes he could show Joseph John Glenelg's letter to him and the minute he had left. He mentions his return to London on the Monday to see if he could do something about starting the Company in conjunction with Samuel Gurney, his reluctance to be involved in it, and the possibility mentioned by Joseph John that they might both be in Parliament together to see to it (a note interjected by his amanuensis, Priscilla, runs 'never I trust'). He asks him to keep the first version of the book, containing the suggestions, still quite secret and to tell Dr Charming how interested he was in his tract on Texas. He also mentions the fact that Andrew was to join Joseph John's bank at Halesworth, his own delight that the little family would thus be settled at no great distance from Northrepps, and his pleasure in the efficiency of John Henry when dealing with the matter. He ponders the need to live in Italy or the south of Spain the following winter for Hannah's health and refers to the ill health of R.H. Gurney, which was causing some concern. Finally, he commends the line Joseph John had taken in America on the slavery question and describes how Joseph Sturge was differing from him over his slave trade views. (Memoir, p. 444.) (Copy.)
