He expresses uncertainty about the establishment of a Company, refers to Ellice's suggestion that the government ought to finance it to the tune of £150,000 p.a. for three years, and that with this as security a capital of £5m could be raised. He thought it possible that he might not be involved in such a company, mentioning his scruples over slavery. If he were involved, he would consider McQueen well-qualified to serve it in Africa, but he warns him that in all things he put the welfare of Black people first and that he could therefore give no guarantee as to permanent employment. He stipulates that he would need to retain his impartiality to all members of the Company if he were to join it.
