She describes the reproof Buxton had administered to the Colonial Office for desertion of their agents abroad, when they had done their duty, for expecting them to do their duty to the oppressed and at the same time pleasing the oppressors, for not supporting them against persecution, and dismissing them for small indiscretions, citing Jeremie's case as an illustration. She also describes his defence of his friends abroad against James Stephen's charge that they were all preoccupied with their own concerns, and Glenelg's reception of this attack.
