He writes of his insomnia after hearing of the Cabinet's approval of his Propositions, his visits to different members of the family, and the satisfactory news from home. He mentions having expected to see McQueen at Duke Street, an intended visit to the Colonial Office, and his expectation that he would despatch McQueen and Becroft to Benin (southern Nigeria) in a fortnight. Later, he writes that he had spent the whole day with Lord Glenelg, Sir George Grey, and McQueen, and that he expected the latter to be sent to Africa within a month. He gives instructions for Fowell and Arthur Upcher to meet him at Telthorpe at eleven o'clock on the following Thursday, together with Larry and his dog, for a shooting trip.
