Expressing approval of the book on the slave trade, thanking him for extracts from Esdale's papers on the horrors consequent on the seizure of slavers, promising to examine Villeneuve's views, and expressing pleasure at his promise of another letter on the subject. He explains that he physically wrote very few of his own letters, since writing gave him a headache, and urges Clarkson not to insist on writing to him in his own hand. He mentions that he would like to speak with Bayley, adding that though he wished to influence the government to try to suppress the slave trade by 'external means', he still believed that the ultimate and lasting solution was the introduction of Christianity into Africa and calls his attention to that part of his statement where he makes this clear.
